I have a service parts supplier I'm working with that is working toward their certification. They want to challenge whether they actually need to be certified.
Along with service parts they perform light assembly to some safety related products such as brakes and calipers. Is this enough to require IATF cetrification?

You as the customer need to make the determination of what certification you actually need. From their standpoint, you need to pay them enough to cover the costs of IATF certification. If they are only doing low volume service parts, the money is probably not there to justify a full IATF certification.
