PFMEA - Item/Function column

    On a PFMEA, in the Items/Function column, I have seen process steps listed and i have seen actual product dimensions listed. My question is should the items listed in the "Items/Function" be focused on process steps only, or should part dimensions also be listed in this column. My thought is that the focus should be on the process steps, but within any of the process steps a potential failure mode could be issues with specific dimensions. Thoughts?

    There are numerous PMEA templates with slightly different wording. Even the AIAG FMEA manual (4th ed.) had multiple variants.
    The most common version uses Process step/Function. Process step should be focused on the process steps and, if necessary, to the operation (if multiple operations occur in a single step). The Function can be as specific as necessary to be able to identify potential failure modes.
    Some examples of function:
    • Torque screw to 15 in-lbs.
    • Attach seat cushion to track using four screws.
    The point is to help you identify potential failure modes, not to document all of the process specifications. Use only as much detail as needed to identify all of the potential failure modes.

    The purpose is to consider the various process activities from the process flow. For example:

    Op 10 Saw, Op 20, face and ctr drill, Op 30 drill 30mm hole.


    The failure modes of Op 30 then become

    Too big, Too small, Too deep, Too shallow, Missing

    The failure effects can be developed from there

    Is there any requirement that states that every product characteristic that is listed on the control plan would also need to be addressed in the PFMEA as a possible failure mode such as a diameter being to big or to small?

    If it's on the Control Plan, it SHOULD be in the PFMEA...
