In the world of IATF 16949 and the AIAG Measurement System Analysis Manual(4th edition), is there anywhere that specifically defines the criteria for grouping gauges together as a family of gauges for the purposes of measurement system analyses?

I will check, but I believe it's generally accepted that gauges are grouped "functionally" such as:

    • Micrometers
    • Vernier calipers
    • Pin/Plug (plain) gauges
    • Plug (Thread) gauges
    • Ring (thread) gauges
    • etc.
There may be some additional influences, such size/range, use which can dictate a family. Do your customers have requirements for what’s in/out?

Ford is the only one where I have seen specific information. They say "Where multiple gauges of the same make, model, size, method of use and application (including range of use) are implemented for the same part, use of a single gauge R&R covering those multiple gauges (family of gauges) requires STA approval.
