We are having an issue within our organization concerning when we need to stamp a trace code vs when we only need to provide a material cert to our customer. We do not have this clearly defined in our SOP's for identification and traceability. We have a difference of opinion....if the customer requires just the material certs and does not specify needing material to be traceable, then we shouldn't make the material traceable. In our organization, customers that require material to be traceable, we stamp the trace code directly onto every part. When they require material certs, some in our organization think this also means we need to make the material traceable. Is anyone out there having any similar issue?

We simply make all the products traceable and only supply material certs when requested. Items may be identified by a batch code or serialized, this depends on teh item. Even if a product can be made from scrap stock, you cannot contain a material defect without knowing how much it affected and where it went.

We do similar as hogheaven. All material gets an id number which flows down to the parts made from it. If the customer request a material cert we can trace it back and provide the original mill cert.
