3.1?... We are talking over 20 years here... Why not miss command-line DOS? :)

We have various machines at work with 7 and 8, but still maintain one machine with XP to troubleshoot problems experienced by customers using that system. No plans here in the near future to do any mass update to 10.

As for the paper clip options; I'd suggest going with pastry, Claes. :p

Microsoft seems to think that upgrading to 10 is a no-brainer for businesses, but as has been said, third party software is always the big roadblock. Our lab equipment all runs on XP, we were warned not to even upgrade to 7 when it came out, as it would not work with what we had (Faro software). Autocad, Solidworks, GageTrak, Act, all expensive stuff, so no upgrades allowed. Once we buy software, it is forever!

After I set up Stardock's Start8, I was able to boot to the desktop and, 99% of the time, run just like Windows 7. The only hitch was that I frequently need to turn devices, like bluetooth and wireles, on and off. This facility is in a Windoze8 "app" that required multiple swipes and presses to perform. In Android, Microsoft's target for mimicking, turning bluetooth on or off is one swipe, one press. Windoze10 has moved Microsoft Update to an "app", thus pinning the app to my taskbar.

My oldest son, who is an Electrical Engineer with a degree in Computer Science, makes me do this. Here is my troubleshooting guide that applies to every problem that I will fix for you:

    So true!

I have a simplified version where I skip the menu items right away and just head to Google...

    Let's not over react... ;-)

We were running the main lab instrument on 3.1 when I first got here, over 20 years ago. I do miss some of the simplicity. And the tutorials for the MS Office suite back then were great for learning the stuff.

I have my various photography software on Windows 7 and suspect it will not work on 10. Even though Microsoft is offering a free upgrade I will probably wait for now.

I wanted to continue to receive updates for W7 on my "server" PC at home. After all, it doesn't have a touch screen. In addition, it has many tweaks that I know, from experience on my laptop, will be broken by W10. I found out that you can uninstall the KB3035583 update, hide it, and then all of that Upgrade-to-Windows-10 stuff will go away.
If you need more detailed instructions on how to get that pesky W10 icon off the right side of your task bar: http://winsupersite.com/windows-10/how-stop-windows-10-upgrade-downloading-your-system

I like having apps on my desktop. As far as desktop, I see more flexibility. Still need to check some legacy programs. Not much difference on the tablet. Not on the phone yet.

I find it highly amusing that the "Windows 10 Enthusiast" group on Linked In seems to be full of articles on how to either disable things you don't want, or how to get back things that are no longer supplied.

A friend brought me a 7 year-old HP laptop that would occasionally have keystroke lag. She thought she might have a bad keyboard or a virus. I determined that, occasionally, the CPU and disk drive usage would go to 100% for a couple of seconds, causing the lag and making it impossible to figure out what process was causing the disturbance. She had purchased a new HP laptop with Windows 10 pre-installed. After I safely transferred all her data to the new laptop, I figured I would update the old laptop to windows 10, then do a fresh install from DVD (.ISO image available for download on microsoft.com but you will need DVD DL media and DL DVD write capability) and see if the problem went away. I completely bricked it while trying to clean out the 7 year old bloatware and 7 years of crapware (attempting to delete the HP recovery partition and extend C: onto it might have had something to do with it. Windows 10 DVD install media to the rescue! The install routine actually let me completely re-partition the hard drive and created its own new System partition. Laptop better than new. No files lost because I made a backup in the clouds first with Windows OneDrive.

If you are going to do this, and you don't have the original windows 7 key (because your laptop is old and the sticker is worn off and you can't find the envelope that you saved 7 years ago), make sure you update to Windows 10 first. Windows 10 automatically activates via internet based on your Windows 7 installation and hardware. Upon a new install, you can skip all the key entry requests. Windows 10 will auto activate once you have a clean install, based on your hardware signature. I installed OpenOffice 4.1 and this lappie gets a new life as a school computer for my friend's granddaughter.

My company has not forced me to switch. When I really need to get work done, I boot my Linux partition. That works like it should. It does exactly what I tell it. Nothing more, nothing less. And it is FAST. And if you have an older machine at home that is slow, throw Linux on it. You'll be stunned.

Well, I just gave it all up and moved to Apple. Not looking back for one second.
After updating my old laptop to Win 10 (from Win 7) it worked kinda OK for a while, then the usual nonsense started - ridiculously long wake-up times (not to mention start-up times), DVD drive not working properly, all that jazz. I guess I could have fought back but I'm just too tired of the Swiss cheese that is Microsoft Windows.
I tried Linux for a while some time back, but it was too hands-on and too much overhead for me.
Apple doesn't let me do whatever I want but at least IT WORKS, and it feels great not to need an antivirus pack. Perhaps it's a golden cage but it's warm and fuzzy in here :)

If you ever need help in "how do I do this in Win 10" just give us a shout. I spent quite a while looking for things I had in Win 7.
