Question regarding 8.7.1.3 Control of suspect product - specifically ensuring "that product with unidentified or suspect status is classified and control as nonconforming product."

In practice does that require having a locked nonconforming part hold area or can this area be open with training and labeling provided.

    Thanks!

You ultimately determine how you control non-conforming product. IATF is pretty vague on how to go about doing that, and then it leaves it open to interpretation by everyone on how they think it should be managed. However, having said that we do have a locked containment area because we want to limit the amount of people that have access to this area. The scrap bins at each cell do not have locks. All nonconforming parts are placed in red scrap bins and any rework parts are placed in a yellow bin. All of this is documented in our Control of Nonconforming Outputs procedure.

Good day @Carlee Gruizinga , and welcome to the site.

Clause 8.7.1 states..."...shall ensure that outputs that do not conform to their requirements are identified and controlled to prevent their unintended use or delivery.

The additional statement in 8.7.1.3, is there to ensure that until disposition is made, SUSPECT product is considered NONCONFORMING, and that unidentified (i.e. "orphan" product) is also included in this category.

The requirement for "identified" , is a must. How your organization identifies, and how your organization controls, is up to your organization. Be selfish, determine what best fits your organization to ENSURE that suspect product is not unintentionally (unintended) used or delivered. There are no requirements beyond what the standard states (i.e. there is no requirement for "locked ...hold area").

    Hope this helps.
    Be well.

    Hi Carlee! Long time...:D

No! I have used one and people went in, over the sides to get the parts they needed! Certainly, as @John C. Abnet indicates, there must be a clear indication that parts are non-conforming - in some manner - plus the disposition (including "Awaiting Disposition" if it is in that state) and a recorded reason for the product being so treated.

Are you having a disagreement with someone over this?

    Thank you! Appreciate the feedback!

Hey Andy! Good to hear from you. No disagreements regarding this topic (yet) - we are just preparing for our IATF certification and wanted to clarify the requirements. Glad to hear we have flexibility!
