    5 RULES OF QUALITY CONTROL

    Rule Number 1

No matter how many items in a shipment you inspect, the one item you do not inspect will be defective….

    Rule Number 2
The one item that is defective will be horrendously and visibly defective…(see rule number 1)

    Rule Number 3
    100% inspection misses 1% of defectives…

    (see rule number 1)

    (Corollary)
This item will be found by the customer…

    Rule Number 4
Always grab the sample in the hardest to reach place, this one has a 100% chance of being defective…

    Rule Number 5
The more critical the dimension is, the greater the chance that it will be out of tolerance… by a lot…

Have you ever heard of an organization that doesn't have Quality Inspectors?

If you had highly trained production operators and they follow the work instructions methodically; and the product meets requirements - do you really need inspectors?

Just thinking outside the box and was wondering if anyone has come across this. Thanks.

Actually we did, they were called inspector-packers, and they were trained in SPC and inspection. They did very good jobs, but the customers required "quality inspectors" as separate from production, a situation I have run into a few times since as well.

This common practice in all manner of organizations - outside of manufacturing. It's odd (IMHO) that we've grown up with this idea that inspection is so necessary, when other type of business appear to survive without a dedicated function to check everyone else's stuff...
