Does anyone's company have a formal reliability engineering program? If you do, what does that group do?

I worked for a Reliability Engineering group. Our job was to (independently) test products in as close to market conditions as was applicable to the design phase and report on failure modes etc. The data collected was massaged by some people who understood Weibull Analysis etc into MTBF/MTTF numbers so Field Service could engineer their field strategy. Simples!

No dedicated staff here :) just me, we do a full RAMS analysis for most rail products, with full in house tests to failure and subsequent analysis for MTBF data as well.

A TS certified manufacturing facility might be able to answer that question.

Did those of you who had program, how did you equate lab testing to the real world?

At one point, our lab testing was "REAL WORLD". We brought in people who operated the product just like it would be in the market. The performance of the product was closely monitored and recorded.

QMSmaster what exactly are you looking for? Is it an organisational problem (e.g. whether it should be an independent group or place under R&D, Quality etc.) or is it meant to define what functions should form part of the group's responsibilities? If I know the problem may be I could share with you my own experience.
