I'm new to the trade and wondering about the product realisation clause in the standard.

Does this apply only to companies who actually produce and item or would you apply this where a company's product is a service where you deliver personnel and equipment to do a job and produce a report afterwards?

It can apply to services as well as manufacturing. The focus or emphasis of the process (es) and control(s) needed to deliver the report may be different - using highly qualified, competent people, for example, instead of machines - but the principles are pretty much the same. I work in a service industry where a report is the result and we apply ISO 9001, section 7 requirements.

As Andy mentioned, it applies to service providers, as well. In section 3.0 of ISO 9001:2008, we read
And if you pay close attention to section 7.5, you note that it refers to production and SERVICE PROVISION.
