    It depends on what your organization does. What's your product?

    I noticed that there are organizations that say "integrate the ___ process into the QMS". Organizations should understand that the QMS requirements are the one that should be integrated into the organization's processes. This is the intent of ISO 9001 clause 5.1.1c which states that: "Top management shall demonstrate leadership and commitment with respect to the quality management system by: ensuring the integration of the quality management system requirements into the organization’s business processes".

    Evaluation of external providers can be done in various forms like:
    • comparing two or more suppliers, or their products, against the established selection criteria;
    • assessing the adequacy, compliance, completeness of suppliers' submitted business documents;
    • conducting background checking or investigation on suppliers' past engagements;
    • checking and inspection of submitted samples, parts or products;
    • monitoring of performance while the contracted services or projects are being delivered;
    • using evaluation forms where suppliers' performance are rated against established criteria;
    • verifying the submitted accomplishment reports prior to release of payment to suppliers;
    • conducting inspections on the progress of completing the awarded projects (e.g. punch listing);
    • reviewing the service level agreements at agreed upon interval; etc.
    Clause 8.4.1 of the standard intends your organization to ensure that the products/services being provided by your suppliers are in accordance with your organization requirements. If you are doing some of the activities mentioned above, then you are already satisfying the intent of the standard.
