AS 9100 Design Validation

    Looking for opinions regarding what the industry design validation expectation is for a third tier component manufacturer that doesn’t have access to the end users system.

    OK, but then the product was designed to meet some kind of brief, so what was that and can you test to it?

    We will always get a set of design requirements from the customer and we perform activities, often testing, to demonstrate that the product meets the requirements. So that takes care of our design verification.

    We know that there are other things we need to account for in the design that are not directly covered by the customer requirements. So we perform additional activities, again often testing, to account for those things. We’ve been calling those additional activities design validation. It’s not as perfect as what we could do with direct access to the customers system but it’s our best effort attempt.

    So my question is, are we right to be calling our additional activities design validation.

    Design verification is testing or inspection to see if the actual designed product meets the design spec - like testing a prototype. Design validation means testing to show it meets the (customer) design brief (usually the input requirements). This might include testing as the customer intends to use it, even if by simulation. If you can demonstrate the simulation is a good approximation, you should be good.
