We are a small company (about 30 total) and want to change from shared files on the network to a managed document system. I had some hopes of finding a super simple system, but have only found ones intended for large companies, the smallest which has the first seat start at $4000.

Open source doc mgt. systems (many are free) look interesting, but are tough to get a grip on how good or useful they are. The lack of support may or may nor be a problem.

Any suggestions of what works for a small company?
    Thanks!

I have a client using Verse (http://www.versesolutions.com/). (I am not endorsing or affiliated with them - just a user). I don't know the cost structure but they're supposedly tailored to the small company. I believe they have some canned setups for various industries (e.g., medical devices). Takes a bit of setup but they've been helpful in getting rolling. They have modules for doc control, training, CAPA, etc. So far so good.

Take a look at The Lean Machine. I currently have a system (purchased before I arrived) and had evaluated it previously. Great support when issues come up. It has all the features you need. Its not perfect, but it does the job. No relationship other than as a user.

You could consider SharePoint, that works for a lot of small companies.

I chose VerseSolutions for my small medical device team. We also investigated some others. Start a convo with me if you want to know more.

SharePoint or a wiki are good solutions, but a read-only directory can work also if you can't spend the money.

I'm in the middle of implementing a Google Drive/Docs document control system - there's really flexible read/write/share controls that are proving pretty helpful.

For me us it was a no-brainer because we use Google Apps for a lot, and Gmail for email hosting.
