    Good day all-
I would like the group's input in regards to the scope intended by the standard, specific to the term "Second-party auditor".

The requirements for "Second-party auditing" are described in 8.2.4.1 as part of the "...supplier management approach".

Our current interpretation is that 7.2.4 then is speaking to ONLY the training and competency of the organization's associates that are assigned to perform the requirements of 8.4.2.4.1 (verification of supplier performance as part of "...supplier management approach".

Our current interpretation is that 7.2.4 is NOT speaking to hired second party auditors (i.e. those contracted by the organization to perform internal audits, etc... within the organization).

I would appreciate the group's thoughts on the interpretation/position stated above.

    Thank you.

My reading would be similar. 7.2.3 deals with internal auditor competency. So if you hired someone from outside to do internal audits, they would have to meet 7.2.3. 7.2.4 would handle those that go out to your supply chain to audit. There seems to be very minimal difference between the two. Good luck.

The relationship to the organization has never (positively) excluded sub-contractors (who may be contracted to take care of many aspects/functions of the QMS), so it applies across the board. In fact, if it's understood WHY the IATF increased the requirement - poor audits of suppliers - it SHOULD (IMHO) be extended to sub-contractors...

I appreciate both @Andy Nichols and @Golfman25 replies. Thank you.

Any other's with a thought/interpretation based on the standards as written?

    Thank you.

Our current interpretation of this clause is that the competent internal auditors of our organization are also competent to conduct the second party audit if it meets the requirement of 7.2.4. We have internal auditors in the organization that are conducting second party audits to our suppliers and contracted organizations.
